Natal Chart 101: What Your Birth Chart Actually Shows

A plain-language primer, no prior astrology knowledge required.

If someone's ever asked for your "big three" and you smiled and nodded without knowing what that meant — this one's for you.

What a natal chart actually is

A natal chart (also called a birth chart) is a snapshot of exactly where the sun, moon, and planets were positioned at the moment and place you were born. Think of it less as a mystical object and more as a very specific kind of map — astrologers use your birth date, time, and location to calculate exactly which sign and "house" each planet fell into at that moment.

That's also why birth time matters, not just birth date — the planets move fast enough across the sky that even an hour's difference can shift the details of your chart.

The "big three," explained

  • Sun sign — what most people mean when they say "I'm a Scorpio." It's based purely on your birth date and reflects your core identity, the broad-strokes version of who you are.

  • Moon sign — based on the moon's position at your exact birth time, this one's often described as your emotional inner world — how you process feelings, what makes you feel safe.

  • Rising sign (Ascendant) — the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at your exact birth time and location. This is often described as how you come across to others, your outward presentation.

Most people only know their sun sign. A full chart adds a lot more texture.

Why the details matter

Beyond the big three, a natal chart maps out ten planets (astrologically speaking, sun and moon count as "planets" here) across twelve houses, each representing a different life area — relationships, career, home, communication, and so on. Where a planet falls, and how it relates to other planets in the chart, is what a reading actually works with.

This is also exactly why we offer two formats: if you send us your birth date, time, and location in advance, we can prepare a full printed chart ahead of time. If you don't have that information handy, or you're a last-minute addition to a group, we can still do a simplified on-site reading using just your birth date — less precise, but still a genuine and useful starting point.

What a reading does with all this

A chart reading isn't about being told what will happen to you. It's a conversation about patterns — recurring themes a chart suggests, and whether they land as true for how you actually experience your life. Like tarot, it works as a mirror for reflection, not a script for the future.

Curious what your chart says?

The Gathering is built around exactly this — bring your birth details in advance for a full printed chart, or come as you are for a simplified reading on the spot.
